Extra U.S. Postal Service inspectors are working now in the Kern County area, trying to stop a sudden spike in mail theft.

A bus driver for the Kern County Superintendent of Schools is receiving a state honor. Damon Anglin will be presented Tuesday with the California Bus Driver of the Year Award.

Five people were arrested after a bicycle was stolen Sunday at San Diego Park in Lamont. The alleged robbers were armed with a gun and knives, and they yelled out the name of their gang during the execution of the crime, according to the Kern County Sheriff's Office.

A teenager was arrested Thursday night for allegedly leading Kern County deputies on a high-speed chase in a stolen car.

Deputies tried to conduct a traffic stop Sunday in the area of Weedpatch Highway and Bear Mountain Boulevard. The driver didn't stop and kept going eastbound toward Arvin.

A horrible smell and oozing blood led Arvin officials to the badly decomposing remains of a dog, apparently left for days in the city's Animal Control truck.
