The Humane Society of the United States and other animal welfare organizations helped Kern County officials remove 134 cats Thursday from a sanctuary in Lebec. Operators of Cause 4 Cats worked with officials, and got to keep about 80 cats.

About 20 cats died in a house fire Friday morning in Arvin. The homeowner, Joy Kennedy, said the Kern County Fire Department told her the home was left uninhabitable, and the cats died of apparent smoke inhalation.

Hundreds of dead sheep have been found dumped on vacant land near Interstate 5. A man camping in the area found the animal carcasses after hearing someone dump the bodies at night. Kern County Animal Control officers are investigating.
