A 19-year-old man is behind bars after a chase Thursday night through the northeast part of the city. Bakersfield police say the chase was prompted by a carjacking about 9:30 p.m. at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital.

Authorities say a fatal shooting Tuesday in east Bakersfield could be gang related. Anthony Daniels, 21, was found on the 1300 block of Reese Avenue suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Deputies are trying to determine a motive and identify suspects.

Country crooner Merle Haggard is recovering at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital after having a malignant tumor removed from his lung. Friends said Monday's surgery was a success and that the 71-year-old Haggard is in stable condition.
