The world record high temperature was recorded at El Azizia, Libya on September 13, 1922 when an official weather observation registered 136 degrees Fahrenheit. Not far behind is the highest reading in the US (and western hemisphere) of 134 degrees at Greenland Ranch- Death Valley, California on...more July 10, 1913. But who would have guessed that the third hottest temperature of all time was near Santa Barbara, California?

Temperatures on Friday morning will be cold. Not quite Frost Advisory cold, but almost. I'm predicting overnight lows in the outlying areas northwest of Bakersfield to dip well into the 30s. A few spots may get down to 32-33 degrees which would be enough for spotty frost. While it won't be chilly...more enough to do any damage to tender vegetation, the kids will certainly need to bundle up in the morning for school. Showers are back in the forecast for Saturday.

Between 1 and 2 inches of snow fell this morning in the Tehachapi area with about 4 inches on the top of Bear Mountain. Cool conditions prevailed with a high of only 38 on Thursday. While it should improve a bit on Friday with sunshine in the morning, look for another chance for mixed rain and snow...more on Saturday. I think we could see another couple of inches of snow, but higher elevations may received 4-8" (say above 5,000'). Winter persists next week with another chance for snow on Tuesday, but finally a break in the action is schedule for Thursday and the following weekend. No snow, no rain- and temperatures into the mid-upper 50s!

It is the beginning of a new month- March. However, for most of recorded history this would have been the beginning of a new year.

The hills are alive with greenery and foliage bursting out like it was spring. Of course, the Vernal Equinox (first day of spring) is still nearly a month away.

Kern county and all of California have been on a “Spring Break” of sorts from the wet winter lately.  But the wet part of our year is still in its ascendancy.

Rain has quickly changed to snow, and with plenty of instability in the atmosphere we are getting some lightning. While only three cloud-to-ground bolts were recorded on "Lightning Tracker," more may be in the offing. Snow is expected to pile up 4-8" in the Tehachapi area this afternoon and...more tonight. Some spots at higher elevations could see 10" or even a foot of new snow. Highway 58 should be impacted today. The snow is forecast to persist into early Wednesday. By the afternoon tomorrow things will start to clear up.

Following a wet weekend in which many areas picked up substantial amounts of rainfall, Monday will be a short break in the action. But Tuesday should snap back to our wet weather ways.

February is here and that means its time to see whether Kern Clyde sees his shadow or not on Ground Fog Day.

It was cloudy and foggy most of the day downtown. Highs only hit 53 degrees and fog drove visibility down to about 700 feet for a time this morning. Now that the rain has moved east after dropping .07" at the studios of KBAK, we can expect several days of low clouds and locally dense fog....more Temperatures will remain slightly cooler than average. By next week (about Wednesday and beyond), computer models are suggesting a return to wet weather. A potential for the "Pineapple Express" moisture conveyor belt from Hawaii is increasing. Storm Ares was huge in California and much of the west. The series of windy and rainy systems gave us a positive bump on the water year.

We have come to the end of another year in the south valley so it begs a quick look at how we fared climatologically.

Without a doubt, the weather pattern has changed. This is the beginning of what I have long anticipated: the return of El Nino.
