Cal State Bakersfield has accepted a $500, 000 donation from Chevron. The money will be used to help support the STEM program.  The goal of the program is to recruit and train students for jobs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The program also gives students hands-on research...more experience. “The way you learn science is not by reading about science but by doing science,” says Dr. Julio Blanco, CSUB Dean of Natural Science and Mathematics.  “It’s absolutely critical for companies like Chevron to have a steady pipeline of young engineers and scientists in all the places we do business so we are always looking for effective ways to stimulate that interest,” says Bruce Johnson, Vice President of San Joaquin Valley Chevron North America Exploration and Production Company.

The Ben & Jerry's ice cream shop in northeast Bakersfield is celebrating the company's 32nd anniversary by giving way free ice cream cones. It's a tradition that dates back to the opening of the first Ben & Jerry's shop in Burlington, VT back in 1978. Outback Steakhouse and FARA Kern County Chapter will have their 2nd annual Steakin 4 a Cure luncheon fundraiser at Outback Steakhouse, 5051 Stockdale Hwy., on Friday, March 12.  The event is to raise funds and awareness for the Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance. Friedreich’s Ataxia is a...more debilitating, life-shortening, degenerative neuro-muscular disorder. Symptoms can vary from childhood to adulthood and can include muscle weakness and loss of coordination in the arms and legs; impairment of vision, hearing and speech; aggressive scoliosis (curvature of the spine); diabetes, and a serious heart condition. Some 400 women are expected to attend a luncheon and auction in downtown Bakersfield to raise money and awareness for heart disease. The Go Red For Women luncheon is sponsored by the American Heart Association. Organizers say it gives women a chance to learn more about the dangers of heart disease...more and strokes. If you saw a fire on the Panorama Bluffs today, chances are it was only a drill. New recruits in the Kern Co. Fire Department academy will be taking part in training drills on the bluffs. The drills were scheduled to begin at 10am.

A Bakersfield family said their dog was accidentally set on fire during surgery at a local animal hospital. Deeann and Scott Herron said they took their 7-year-old Dachshund named Pumpkin for an emergency hysterectomy when equipment malfunctioned and burned her.
