With a unique twist on science and education, the host of "Smash Lab" comes to Bakersfield College. Deanne Bell will give a special presentation on Tuesday, March 23.  It's part of series sponsored by the College's Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) program. Bell is known for taking...more everyday technology and applying it in revolutionary new ways with "Smash Lab." As an opto-mechanical design engineer in the aerospace industry, Bell designed a FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared) system and a LADAR optical navigation system with Raytheon. She hosted PBS' Design Squad before moving to Smash Lab.  The show on the Discovery Channel is described as focused on "destruction instruction" to perform experiments on existing technology for a better world. Bell's presentation will be held in the Fireside Room in the John Collins Campus Center starting at noon on March 23.

A young entrepreneur celebrates a big business success in Bakersfield.  The Intuition Skate Shop is calling it their "Decade of Blade." Owner Matthew Mickey will have the big celebration on March 26, and it'll feature world famous rollerblader Chris Haffey. Mickey said he started the shop as a "19...more year old rollerblader's dream" with just $565 in the bank. The celebration will start at 4 p.m. at the shop, located at 705 18th Street. Mickey calls Haffey the "greatest stunt rollerblader of all time," and said Haffey will promiote his new signature model skate and sign autographs.

A police chase in central Bakersfield resulted in the arrest of five teenagers who police say were in the process of burglarizing a home and breaking into a car. It happened around 9 a.m. Friday on the 700 block of Oleander Avenue. "It all appears to be related to ongoing offenses that have been...more occurring over the past couple months," said Sgt. Orbin Love with the Bakersfield Police Department. Detectives said there are number of open burglary cases in the Oleander area and are investigated whether those arrested today could be connected with those crimes. Residents also said there has been a spike in petty thefts over the past few months. "Just a few months ago, someone stole license plates off my car," said area resident, Doug Stewart. "I don't think it would be fair to say that I feel as safe as I did when I bought the place 12 years ago." One resident said a burglar once stole her grandfather's clothes right from the dryer. A Kern County Sheriff's deputy was arrested Friday on suspicion of stealing from his ex-girlfriend and, possibly, the United States military. Deputy Joshua White, 24, allegedly went into his ex-girlfriend's apartment on the 6200 block of Park Meadows Drive last week and took some items that...more included a camera, DVD and prescription medications. Stephanie Gann told the sheriff's office that White used a key that he wasn't allowed to have to go into her apartment without permission. The sheriff's office served a search warrant on White's home Friday and recovered some of the stolen property along with allegedly stolen military equipment. The sheriff's office news release didn't specify how the flight helmet, Kevlar helmet and body armor was stolen or if White stole it from the government or obtained it another way. The Tree Foundation of Kern, in conjunction with the cities of Bakersfield and Taft, announced that 50 trees that were going to die on Calloway Drive in Bakersfield due to the Westside Parkway project will be rescued and replanted. As the sponsor, the city of Taft will help move the trees. On March 17, Aera Energy LLC presented California State University, Bakersfield with a $500,000 endowment for an educational concentration to prepare occupational safety and health professionals. The endowment establishes the Aera Energy Concentration in Occupational Safety and Health Management...more which will help meet regional labor force needs and expand career opportunities in the field of occupational safety and health. CSUB is sending a team of business students from the School of Business and Public Administration to compete in the Regional HRGames in Reno, NV on March 20, 2010. The team, comprised of students, Amber Newsom, Adrian Nevarez and April Perreira, placed fifth in the California HRGames which were...more held at California State University, Bakersfield on February 27. The top five teams move on to compete in the Regional Competition.  Bakersfield will join the teams from CSU, Fresno and CSU, Sanislaus in representing California.  Other teams in the Region will be from the states of Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming.
