Congressman Kevin McCarthy, R-Bakersfield, announced Tuesday that his office is accepting summer internship applications.
Applicants must possess good writing and computer skills, be at least a junior in college by the fall term and have a minimum 3.0 grade point average, according to a news...more release. Preference will be given to residents of California's 22nd Congressional District, which includes most of Kern and San Luis Obispo counties and part of Los Angeles County, but all applications will be considered.
Summer interns are responsible for their expenses, including transportation and lodging costs, but will receive a $1,500 stipend, before taxes. The summer Congressional Internship program is generally a six-week session. Interns typically spend two weeks in the Bakersfield district office followed by four weeks in the Washington, D.C., office.

Congressman Kevin McCarthy, R-Bakersfield, will host a job resources expo March 8 at the Marriott Hotel at the Convention Center, 801 Truxtun Ave.
The expo, which will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., will feature more than 50 businesses and organizations, according to a news release from McCarthy's...more office. It's designed to connect job seekers with potential local employers.

The Kern County Republican Party is hosting its annual Lincoln Day dinner on Thursday at the Doubletree Hotel, 3100 Camino Del Rio Court.
The dinner starts at 7:30 p.m., and organizers said there were still tickets available as of Wednesday. The special guest will be Congressman Peter Roskam,...more R-Ill, according to a news release.

Children are no longer protected by Jessica's Law, which once prohibited sex offenders from living 2,000 feet of schools, parks or other places children are present. Jessica's Law is being legally challenged by sex offenders who say it's unconstitutional.
