Cesar Chavez' birthday will be celebrated with people gathering in Delano to seek immigration reform. Thousands of farm workers and community activists are expected to turn out for the event March 28 at Cesar Chavez Park, according to a news release from the United Farm Workers of America. Chavez,...more a labor and civil rights activist, was born on March 31, 1927. His birthday is celebrated as an official holiday in eight states, including California. In 1966, Chavez bought his Forty Acres compound outside of Delano, where he would fast for better wages and working conditions. The U.S. Department of the Interior made the compound a National Historic Landmark in 2008. The UFW-sponsored march is part of the Reform Immigration FOR America national campaign pushing for comprehensive immigration reform legislation that would allow about 12 million undocumented immigrants to legalize their residency in the Unites States, according to the news release. Authorities are investigating a drive-by shooting in Wasco that left three men injured, one in critical condition. Sheriff's deputies said the victims were hanging out in a vacant lot Thursday night when the shooters pulled up in a truck.

Element Skateboards will stop in Delano for its Make It Count international contest series. Skaters will compete March 13 at Delano Skatepark with the chance of making it to the Element YMCA Skate Camp near Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks. There, skaters will vie for the opportunity to be...more sponsored by Element and further their skating career, according to a company news release. Registration will be at noon that day, with the contest starting at 1 p.m. Entry is free with the donation of a canned food item, which will be donated to a local food bank. Another inmate has walked away from a minimum-security prison in Kern County. Humberto Martinez Jr., 35, was discovered missing Sunday night during a head count at a fenceless satellite camp.

Kern County firefighters will train Feb. 24 in the old Kmart building at 2310 High Street. The city is offering use of the building for a pair of training sessions before the building is demolished, according to a fire department news release. A large-area search, usage of a thermal-imaging camera...more and air management will be covered by the training sessions. At the end of the individual scenarios, all crews will combine for two large-scale exercises involving a firefighter entrapment and/or injury scenario, according to the news release.

A Delano man was arrested a short time after police were called to a parking lot on Jefferson Street February 9th to a report of an attempted kidnapping. The victim told officers a man grabbed her just before 11 a.m. while she was putting her baby in her car and tried to force her to leave the...more area. The woman was able to resist and the suspect left. Police were able to make an arrest within minutes of the report because the victim supplied officers  license plate information from the suspect's vehicle according to a department news release. The suspect is identified as 33-year-old Juan Ramirez Ceron. He faces charges of kidnap and sexual battery.

Authorities are looking for someone who may have blown up a vehicle. Kern County firefighters were called early Thursday to a vehicle fire at 17th Avenue and Lexington Street. Firefighters determined the fire could have been started by an explosive devise, so they called out the sheriff's office,...more according to a sheriff's office news release issued Friday. Bomb squad members examined the vehicle and confirmed that an explosive devise was used to start the fire. Witnesses also reported seeing someone run from the scene before the fire. Investigators are searching for the person responsible, though no suspect information has been released. Anyone with information helpful to the case is asked to call Sgt. Sean Pratt at 868-6881.

Authorities are looking for a Delano man who escaped from prison. Omar Paniagua Zaragoza, 33, was serving time in federal prison for conspiracy to distribute cocaine and possession of a firearm during a drug trafficking crime. He was set for release in 2017. Zaragoza was found missing Sunday night...more from the Taft Correctional Institution's satellite camp facility, which is a minimum-security facility and does not have a security fence. Zaragoza's home is listed by the prison as being on Glenwood Street in Delano.
