About 20 cats died in a house fire Friday morning in Arvin. The homeowner, Joy Kennedy, said the Kern County Fire Department told her the home was left uninhabitable, and the cats died of apparent smoke inhalation.

Authorities are looking for a man they said kidnapped his son. The Kern County Sheriff's Office issued a wanted poster Thursday for 20-year-old Alejandro Montejano Sr., who allegedly abducted his 1-year old boy in November.

California's Board of Education has decided to oversee four of the state's poorest-performing school districts. Officials say the McFarland and Arvin districts, along with two districts in Monterey County, failed to meet federal standards set by the No Child Left Behind Act.

It's a bitter Christmas eve for one Arvin neighborhood as one or more individuals take to slashing tires with a knife. The vandalism comes at a time when people are already strapped for cash and can't afford to buy new tires.

A house fire in Arvin has claimed the life of an elderly man. Neighbors say they tried to put the fire out when they noticed smoke coming from the home in the 800 block of Hutson Avenue, but the flames were just too strong.

Foothill High School will be joining Centennial and Arvin high schools in the "We the People" competition in Sacramento.
Foothill, 501 Park Drive, received a wildcard entry into the state finals based on high scores achieved this past weekend. Centennial also received a wildcard spot. Arvin won...more Saturday's competition.
The "We the People" competition is based on real Congressional hearings in which students give testimony on questions relating to their study of the U.S. Constitution. The winner of the state competition will represent California in the national competition in Washington, D.C.

Two armed men entered a house in Arvin and tied up a couple. Police say the suspects stole a large amount of cash and jewelry. But police don't have many leads and are urging anyone with information about this case to come forward.

A suspect wanted in connection with the shooting death of 21-year-old Eladio Ramirez, of Arvin, was nabbed at the border as he was trying to enter the United States. Arturo Becerril is in custody at Lerdo Jail. A second suspect is outstanding.

A family said they were shocked when a parent orientation at the high school was conducted in Spanish and only translated into English. The meeting was held by the Parent Institute for Quality Education. A spokesman says the language policy will change.
