With a unique twist on science and education, the host of "Smash Lab" comes to Bakersfield College. Deanne Bell will give a special presentation on Tuesday, March 23.  It's part of series sponsored by the College's Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) program. Bell is known for taking...more everyday technology and applying it in revolutionary new ways with "Smash Lab." As an opto-mechanical design engineer in the aerospace industry, Bell designed a FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared) system and a LADAR optical navigation system with Raytheon. She hosted PBS' Design Squad before moving to Smash Lab.  The show on the Discovery Channel is described as focused on "destruction instruction" to perform experiments on existing technology for a better world. Bell's presentation will be held in the Fireside Room in the John Collins Campus Center starting at noon on March 23.

A young entrepreneur celebrates a big business success in Bakersfield.  The Intuition Skate Shop is calling it their "Decade of Blade." Owner Matthew Mickey will have the big celebration on March 26, and it'll feature world famous rollerblader Chris Haffey. Mickey said he started the shop as a "19...more year old rollerblader's dream" with just $565 in the bank. The celebration will start at 4 p.m. at the shop, located at 705 18th Street. Mickey calls Haffey the "greatest stunt rollerblader of all time," and said Haffey will promiote his new signature model skate and sign autographs.

In one of the most anticipated DVD/BluRay releases of the year, dozens of fans of the "Twilight" franchise lined up outside Best Buy at the Promenade for the 12:01am 03/20/2010 release of the film series' second movie, "New Moon".Many fans showed up wearing "Twilight" gear, most of which either...more supported Team Edward or Team Jacob (author's note: Go Team Edward!). While the fans waited to be let inside, Best Buy staff hosted a "Twilight" trivia game.Then at 12:01am, the doors opened, and the fans calmly walked in to buy their copy of the DVD. And if getting the movie first weren't good enough, the early bird "Twilighters" got an added surprise with the DVD being sold at a discount price.

A Wasco man got a pretty good scare when he wound up stuck sideways on a palm tree about 30 feet from the ground. Kern County Firefighters had to be called out to rescue the professional tree trimmer, Victor Fuentes. Fuentes regularly climbs trees, cuts leaves and branches without a problem but...more Friday, March 19 was different. Fuentes says he was shaving off a stack of leaves when another heavy stack above him suddenly came loose and fell straight down on him, knocking him sideways. His feet were left dangling, as he was being held only by the safety straps he uses. Fire crews used truck ladders to reach him and bring him down.  Fuentes was glad to touch ground but says the scary ordeal will not stop him from going back to work climbing trees.He refused to go the hospital.

A police chase in central Bakersfield resulted in the arrest of five teenagers who police say were in the process of burglarizing a home and breaking into a car. It happened around 9 a.m. Friday on the 700 block of Oleander Avenue. "It all appears to be related to ongoing offenses that have been...more occurring over the past couple months," said Sgt. Orbin Love with the Bakersfield Police Department. Detectives said there are number of open burglary cases in the Oleander area and are investigated whether those arrested today could be connected with those crimes. Residents also said there has been a spike in petty thefts over the past few months. "Just a few months ago, someone stole license plates off my car," said area resident, Doug Stewart. "I don't think it would be fair to say that I feel as safe as I did when I bought the place 12 years ago." One resident said a burglar once stole her grandfather's clothes right from the dryer. Four-time Pro Bowl linebacker Joey Porter agreed to a three-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals on Friday. Porter, entering his 12th season, spent the past three with the Miami Dolphins, who released him in March. He played the first eight years of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
